Health in Haiti

The system of health care in Haiti is the history of a disaster.  Infant mortality and, also mortality in genera is highest of the Western hemisphere and more particularly in Haiti. The HIV AIDS and tuberculosis are the first infectious causes of  death in the young adults. Many are lost because of diseases related to malnutrition during these years.

The clinical and hospital public network was abandoned and the majority health professionals deserted Haiti. The health care services are not accessible to the whole of the population. It is necessary sometimes to traverse several km to arrive at a health center.

In many cases the health care is not free, which pevents even more  of the most vulnerable population from accessing these services. Thus in the field of health the children lack of access to a foundation of health. We are all victims of the collapse of the public health system.

Closings of the private clinics and hospital multiply in the area as well as the refusal to serve patients to poor to pay. These patients turn to our hospital. The commune of Thomonde in the south-east department, for example, its 400,00 inhabitants during all the year 2000, had no doctor, nor any nurse. Every day people have to make decisions of a moral nature, transporting bodies from clinic to clinic where there is no care, having abortions, that is to say sleeping with death. We hope that you will have never to make such decisions. What will we do the youngest today for our country Haiti?
